Frank Newell started the business just after the Gulf War January 1991,
when he recognised there was an opening for the manufacture of road tankers
to compliment his already successful haulage and fuel business. Initially
Mr Brian Edwards (ex Hartwell's) started the business with a small office
and telephone. Brian's objective was to fill a large workshop with road
tanker orders for new remount or repairs. Experienced technicians were
recruited and with a lot of hard work from Frank, Brian and their team, the
business began to grow in the first year.
More experienced personnel were also recruited such as Clive Felton, Alan
Oldfield in Sales together with John Cook in Design. All ex Kinnings Road
Tankers, they brought with them a wealth of experience, which further
enhanced the business.
By 1993, RTN was building over eighty new road tankers a year and was fast
becoming a name to reckon with in the oil industry. The following year,
Frank decided that building tank vessels was essential to further
progression so Don McKelvie was recruited as tank production manager.
In 1995 the company had far outgrown its premises in Sheffield so a move to
Hoyland near Barnsley was made. The present site is ideally situated just
one mile from the motorway and has excellent facilities, five overhead
cranes, three large tank and fitting workshops and space for sales and
storage of road tankers and chassis.

Brian Edwards told Irish Trucker: The future of Road Tankers Northern is
excellent but in the ever-changing oil industry, there is no room for complacency.
Everyone here is committed to offering a quality product and service that
is second to none. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our
loyal customers in Ireland who recognise that RTN means quality and
service. Your support is most appreciated and we look forward to ensuring
that the standards we have established in the last ten years will be just
as good in the next ten.
Road Tankers Northern have again been very busy in 2006 with 250 new tank barrels manufactured in Aluminium, Mild Steel and Stainless Steel. In addition, tanker refurbishments, tank remounts and conversions to bottom loading have contributed to an exceptional yeart.
Winners of the "Tanker Builder of the Year 2006" award, RTN have recently purchased further manufacturing facilities at their Barnsley depot. The new workshops are part on an ongoing expansion programme to enable increased production in Aluminium Tank Trailers and LPG vessels, and with this increased capacity, are looking forward to increase output by 10% in 2007
RTN are continuing to expand their customer base and have continued to improve on product quality. Every effort is made to sustain their reputation for giving first class after sales support to all products supplied, irrespective of order size
Electronic metering, product transfer and sealed parcel/gravity meter
discharge are becoming more of a requisite to an increasing number of
operators, although top loading is still popular with AD's who have their
own storage facility.
In addition to rigid vehicle manufacture, Road Tankers Northern have the
sole distributorship for Aluminium semi trailers within the UK for Caldal
S.L the Spanish tank builders. This partnership allows Road Tankers
Northern to offer a range of vehicles and trailers up to 41,000 litres
capacity to ADR regulations.
Road Tankers Northern will be at the FPS exhibition at the International Centre, Telford on Stand numbers 1 and 2 on the 18th and 19th April 2007..
We look forward to seeing you at Telford to discuss your future
requirements.
